by the Emil Viklický Trio, is one with which I have a special connection: I wrote the liner notes! Moreover, in addition to being a good friend of Emil, I'm also his North American publicist/promoter, so I certainly have multiple reasons for talking up this CD (click on the image at left to view the inside jacket). |
But none of this would mean much, really, if the music itself -- what it all comes down to -- didn't stand up on its own ... and it does. I'm by no means the only one to think so, either. Witness noted critic Tony Emmerson, British expatriate now prominent in the Czech Republic's thriving jazz scene, who writes in his well-regarded blog Prague Jazz that Live in Vienna is "an explosion of music." Tony goes on to add that "Whether you are interested in Emil Viklický, Czech jazz, jazz with a national identity, or just piano jazz in general, this is one of the finest new recordings that you could purchase. Viklický has proven once again that he is a world-class pianist, composer and bandleader, as good as any and better than most." Very well put, indeed -- I couldn't agree more. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ One of the most unique -- and uniquely Czech -- items in the entire Cube-Metier catalog is Moravian Gems, featuring Emil, bassist extraordinaire George Mraz, and the brilliant Iva Bittová. "The jagged rhythms, intriguing harmonies and colorful melodies in this remarkable collection flow out of the folk tradition of Moravia to merge with the drive, sophistication and inventiveness of jazz," writes Doug Ramsey, arguably the most knowledgeable American critic with respect to the contemporary jazz scene in the Czech Republic. Ramsey singles out Bittová, whom he describes as "a singer of uncommon vocal purity and flexibility and musicianship". ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Vibe Fantasy Radek Krampl (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Don't Get Ideas Ondrej Pivec Organic Quartet (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Invitation Yvonne Sanchez (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hidden Paths David Doruzka (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Brooklyn Moods Karel Ruzicka Jr. (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Just Floating Lightly Petr Korinek & Friends (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Kosvanec and Friends Prague Jazz (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Alone Robert Balzar Trio 2 CD Set (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $34.00 (+$5.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Summertime Scott Robinson + Emil Viklicky Trio (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Going It Alone NajPonk (click image at left for complete information, including personnel & tracks) $17.00 (+$3.00 S/H) |
