The front jacket illustration
    of Warrior of God, seen
above, depicts Jan Zizka in a
    detail from a huge mural
(approx. 10 feet high by 17
    feet wide!), titled The Battle
    at Grunwald, completed in
    1878 by Polish artist Jan
    Matejko in the National
    Museum in Warsaw.

     This 1410 battle between
    the Prussian Knights of the
    Teutonic Order and the
    combined forces of Poland
    and Lithuania was an
    epochal event, arguably the
    largest battle of the Middle
    Ages.

     Matejko took numerous
    artistic liberties with the
    historical facts (including
    Zizka's role), striving to
    inspire his fellow Poles to
    resist Bismark's intensified
    Germanization program
    following the Partitions of
    Poland during the late 18th
    century.
